Pizza

For those who are pizza fanatics, please be aware. I discovered this pizza kitchen inside Thrifty Foods one day while I was shopping at the Thrifty’s in Port Moody. It was different than my local Thrifty’s because it’s got this “Woodstone Kitchen”. So being a foodie, I took one of its menu home and studied it. But it wasn’t till today that I actually had the chance to try it. And I regretted not trying this sooner!

I ordered the pizza in advance from home and yes, the kitchen answered the phone directly. No transferring, no waiting (well, maybe for a couple seconds). But in general, no hassle. The kitchen said it would be 25 – 30 minutes before the pick up, which sounded good to me cause it would take time to drive there, then there’s parking and traffic (yes, TRAFFIC! on a Saturday afternoon).

Woodstone Pizza Kitchen

I arrived just at the perfect timing as the second pizza came right out of the oven. Most pizza joints use roller blades, but not here! One gigantic knife will do. Though, after getting home I realized some pieces weren’t cut all the way through. The drive home was almost irresistible, the pizza smelled so good inside the car and I was so hungry that I wanted to reach for a piece.  Read the rest of this entry »

Yolk's Breakfast on Urbanspoon

Yolk’s

I’m a major fan of poached eggs. And when I first heard of the name “Yolk’s” the first thing that comes to mind is egg-goodness. I discovered Yolk’s from Diana’s (@Foodology) instagram post. And I just couldn’t wait to try it out. We arrived on a sunny Sunday afternoon. They were actually about to closed, so not a lot of food left. At least not from their daily menu. So I opted something original.

Poached Free-Range Eggs Sandwich – $6.95

I had one of their breakfast sandwiches. This is the double smoked bacon with fresh arugula, hollandaise, one egg on an English muffin. I liked how the English muffin was toasted. Everything made it seemed like it was just an original breakfast muffin. But just wait…

I was told that be careful of the runny yolk because it’s really YOLKY!

Poached Free-range egg sandwich

And was she ever right, I had let my girlfriend take the first bite. And the result was  yolk all over my pants and at least half of the yolk gone! I’ll have to come back to get the full experience again. As you can see, the yolk is very yellow-orange coloured. Other than the egg, the bacon was good, not too crispy but just crunchy. I would say it’s a pretty expensive for breakfast, but I guess once in awhile you can pamper yourself. Especially with a food cart like this, all they sell is breakfast food! :)

Going to The Vancouver Christmas Market?

Vancouver Christmas Market

HINT: Check-in via Foursquare and get 2 for 1 tickets to the Vancouver Christmas Market

What better way to spend a night out with your significant other or your kids with a festive theme? I’ve had the chance to visit the Vancouver Christmas Market this year. And fortunately I was able to get free tickets to the market or else ticket prices ranges from $2 to 5 depending on if you’re a kid or an adult. One good thing is that re-entry is free ALL SEASON long.

Let me tell you first, there are more food/drinks booths here more than variety shops. And it is outdoors so dress appropriately. The market is a German market, from what I have heard the real ones are humongous. So this is just a tiny glimpse of the German tradition. Not to spoil the entire market, I’ll just give a brief tour of what I thought was interesting.

My girlfriend and I came after dinner and we were stuffed silly (or I was), so bad idea. Nor did I know that there were going to be so much food in here. (They weren’t cheap, but still lots of food). We got here just before 8pm and it was packed! It wasn’t raining but it was cold that night.

Apple Cider

First thing that caught my eyes were these mugs floating around the market even before I got in the place. The station is an Apple cider stand and there are two of these in the market. We didn’t go for this one cause we wanted something more portable. So went for the one behind it.

Apple Cider

Both were $4 and I was happy that we chose this one because it included a stick of cinnamon. I gave it several twirls before I threw it out cause it was giving quite a strong sense of cinnamon. The apple cider wasn’t too sweet which was good.

The Soup Meister

The other thing that caught my eyes was “The Soup Meister” from Lonsdale Quay. I loved their soups but we were just too full to give into soup.

German Pasta

If I hadn’t have dinner, I would have tried this place.

German Pasta

The pasta was cooked in a huge wok separated into three sections. This was tempting but I just had pasta for dinner so having more of it just wasn’t on the list. Read the rest of this entry »

Pig On The Street

Today I’m taking you to a food cart adventure out in downtown Vancouver. I was out at downtown for work that day and so decided to eat out for lunch. One of my co-workers suggested me to try “Pig on the street”. They are a flat bread specialist and of course, pork! I got there right before noon, so I just missed the lunch crowd.

The Menu

After studying their menu, I decided to go for something more special. So I ordered “The Napolean” on their special menu, which they have on the side window of their van. Read the rest of this entry »

Summer Night Market 夏日夜市 on Urbanspoon

A little late for this post, but better late than never. But as I’m writing, I realize that summer is already past because this weekend marks the end of the night market food runs. Now I haven’t been to the night market as much this year, mainly because there really isn’t much to see anymore rather people just go for the overpriced food carts.

After being to the new Richmond night market, I’ve came to revisit the old summer night market. It was still quite vibrant, still lots of boutiques (more than the new one) and still the same size of food carts (but at cheaper prices).

Rotato

First off, I’d like to start with this gigantic rotato, which is only $3! It was almost the length of my arm! The regular size is $2, but I was people having this and couldn’t resist. Unlike Richmond night market, there is 3 to 4 stands of these potatoes on a stick. Hence, driving down prices. Oh, I love competition.

Rotato place

Now, I have no idea what this place is called. But they actually have people swaying you into the line to order, talk about hardcore selling. But I’m pretty sure if they didn’t do that, they would have still got tons of business with their huge $2 sign.

Squid!!

Another favourite of mine is the pan fried/grilled squid! All cooked up in that humongous wok in the background. Read the rest of this entry »

Admission Prices

So I finally made it out to the new Richmond night market this year for the first time. I’ve been bugging my girlfriend to go for quite awhile, but the weather hasn’t been all that cooperating or that we were just busy with stuff that weekend. The admission prices are $1.50 per person, which isn’t so bad if you go as a couple because that’ll only be $3. If you decide to go many times, then they have what they call a “Zoom Pass”, which is really an amazing deal. Except, I’m not sure how the calculations will all work out. And did I mention parking is FREE?

Parking lineup

Free parking comes at a cost! And that’s LINE UPS! Yup, there is just a ridiculous line up just trying to get into the parking lot. My girlfriend and I went early, but there were line ups even out to Bridgeport and No.3 already. It took us at least 15mins to get into the parking lot. Despite the line up, the parking system they had was very organized and well thought out! However, there is only one lane in and one lane out! So, think about how crazy traffic will get. There are businesses outside the parking lot, made their parking available at a premium. But you will have to walk in. Taking the skytrain is not a bad option.

Richmond Night Market

Richmond Night Market Crowd

And of course the most crowded section of the market is the food section. The food area is twice as large as the summer night market. Just imagine on a hot day out, it’s absolutely crazy! Read the rest of this entry »

Special Feature: The House of Dancing Water (A Review)

I hope everyone had a Happy Chinese/Lunar New Year. For those who celebrated, I’m sure you are stuffed and spoiled with all the great food (probably to the point you can’t eat anymore). Well that’s just perfect because this post isn’t about food. For those who are following my blog may know that I have been away on vacation the past couple of weeks, and as I have hinted in my previous post, I have something special for you. So, this is it!

As a perk of being a blogger, you often get free stuff from sponsors (even away from home). While I was in Hong Kong, I took a mini-vacation to the islands of Macau (to many, this is known as mini-Vegas). Besides eating and visiting the tourist areas, the other activity was to watch shows. And this was exactly it, the best show in Macau was called “The House of Dancing Water“.

IMPORTANT: The House of Dancing Water will be taking a break from February 7th to the 16th, 2012. So, if you plan to watch this show on these dates, think again!

The House of Dancing Water

If you’ve ever watched Cirque du Soleil and thought the performance was amazing, well, you are going to be thrilled about this one for sure! This is a HK$2 Billion production located right in the centre of “City of Dreams” in Macau. The “City of Dreams” is composed of several big hotels, including Hard Rock, Crown Towers, and Grand Hyatt. The House of Dancing Water is exactly what its’ name portrays. The entire performance is on water! The theatre is performed in world’s largest commercial pool, considering the depth of the pool, it equals to more than 5 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Just the pool itself will stun you because it can dry out in seconds and transform into a dive tank just as quickly!

The Theatre

Just a few notes on the producer, Franco Dragone. He’s the producer of several world-renowned productions, just to name a few the aquatic show Le Reve, and Celine Dion’s new tour A New Day. He’s practically half Canadian from his studies at Cirque school in Quebec, Canada.

View from Centre Isle

View from Centre Isle

When I walked into the theatre, I was already impressed with the surroundings. I have heard rumours that both the stage and the theatre were small. In my opinion, I thought it was a pretty decent size for a production house. You certainly don’t get the huge ones that are found in Las Vegas because they just don’t have the space for it, but it is about the size of those travel tour tents put up by Cirque du Soleil, if not bigger.

A note on when buying tickets for the show, there are 4 different zones. A/B/C and VIP. Thanks to the media folks at The House of Dancing Water, we were seated at A zone on the H-level, which is about 8 rows in (right in the middle). Now, these tickets at original value are about $100US and are situated almost centred to the stage. In my opinion, I think these tickets are even better than VIP tickets because you can see the exits/entrances clearly and that way you won’t see the back of a person directly, at least you can see the side of their faces. Another perk of sitting in zone A is that you are almost guaranteed that you won’t get wet. For those in C, you aren’t so lucky. But, there are water jackets for you. Take that as a 4D experience.

The Pool

I got there a little earlier so I could tour around the pool, so here’s a clear shot of  the pool (as close I could get before falling in). It’s so deep, I could not see the bottom so you can imagine how deep it would be.

I wasn’t able to capture many of the shots I’ve taken, due to the fact that I had forgotten my camera charger back in Hong Kong. So, I had to live with 2 batteries and 2 shows in 2 days. It was rather a challenge because the camera uses more battery life in low lighting and especially because I took a lot of videos the night before. I was actually afraid I couldn’t capture these breath-taking moments on film. Luckily I survived it, but I’ve taken less photos than I wanted. Here are just some of the shots I took that I thought was worth sharing.

First Scene

I was thoroughly impressed with the  coordination of the performers throughout the performance. In this scene, there’s about 30 divers diving into a pool. But in reality, you would normally see one diver diving into a pool (in the Olympics). I could literally hear the audiences go “aww”! How do they even do it without hitting one another? It’s truly impressive, there’s actually behind the scene staff underneath the water directing traffic. So what the audience sees is only half of the show.

Scenes

The House of Dancing Water was not only performed on water, but you also get to watch acrobats as well, your typical Cirque du Soleil experience as well. The pool can easily transform into dry land with a flash of an eye.

Scenes

Beyond water and land, there’s quite a few mid-air performances. It’s such a thought-out transition when technicians need to adjust the water levels in the pool.

Scenes

If this doesn’t surprise you, I don’t know what will. Besides being a transformed pool, it’s also a 239 automated water fountain. I think this one is just a little more interesting than the Bellagio fountain in Vegas.

Scenes

Scenes

One of the most exciting scenes in the performance was the motorcycle show. Even before I went, I have heard it’s one of the most memorable part of the show, there are 7 motorcycle stuntmen which will fly across the stage.

Scenes

Scenes

One of the things I was most impressed with, was the visual graphics in the show. If you are a high-tech type of person, you would have really enjoy this show. There are projection graphics to make the show come alive, some of these projections are 3D and are used very well with lighting and water. Some of these images are shown through light and water, pretty neat. Also, water just doesn’t come out of the ground, it also falls out from the sky.

Scenes

Aside all the lights and water,  the story line was captivating as well. It’s got a lot of flavours in it, not only a love story but also a journey. It’s always a good show when there are bad guys fighting the good guys. The good guys always win. It’s a fairy tale happily ever after ending.

Scenes

The Crew

Overall, the show was very breathtaking, from the story to the performance. There was not a moment I stared away from the stage. Every minute of the show was worth it, it was truly a remarkable production. The show will be in Macau for good, and I don’t see how they can move a 3.7 million gallon pool with 239 automated fountains and 11 ten-ton elevators for a tour. So if you are in Macau or Hong Kong, do make the trip and I am sure you will not be disappointed. Please note, they are closed from February 7th to the 16th, 2012.

Gift Shop

If you are the Gift Shop type of person, I would suggest you go early and visit the gift shop because there’s always a crowd after the show. So just a friendly hint to avoid the crowd and the lineups. But for myself, I got a little something already from the team at The House of Dancing Waters.

Souvenir

Souvenir

I’m pretty sure you won’t find this set at the gift shop, but you could find the soundtrack there. What’s included in this package is a USB, the Soundtrack, a 3D Poster, and books of the entire performance and storyline.

Year of the Dragon

And to those who followed my last post … the dragon is found here in the City of Dreams, right in front of Salvatore Ferragamo. Stay tuned for all the great eats in Macau.

Happy Chinese New Year! (fr. Hong Kong McDonald)

It’s my first actual blog post for the year of 2012! I know it’s been long since the last time I wrote, and I really want to give a sincere thanks to those who have subscribed to my blog and those first time visitors, my most sincere welcome to you! Even though I haven’t been writing for the past 3 weeks, I was very shocked to see so much traffic to my blog for the time I was away. Thanks you all. So just some personal update, I’ve just flown back to cold cold Vancouver from my trip to Asia. And during my next few posts, I’ll be covering a few themed restaurants in Hong Kong, Taipei, and Macau. And a few surprises here and there for all the places I went to in these few weeks time. But first things first…

HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR! It is Chinese New Year around the corner, and in Asian countries it’s a huge celebration! There’s ads everywhere, shops that sells Chinese New Year gigs, it’s literally everywhere. And it’s actually a public holiday for a few days in Hong Kong.

So while away on vacation in Hong Kong, I had the opportunity to try their limited time promo meal for Chinese New Year! It’s called the “Prosperity Beef Burger“. (It’s also available in Chicken, if preferred.)

Prosperity Beef Burger

The meal included the burger, curly fries, a drink, and a package of red envelopes from McDs.

Prosperity Beef Burger

Prosperity Beef Burger

The burger was in the shape of a hot dog bun. The burger was really hot when I opened it, unlike the buns here in Canada, which are only warm to touch. The Prosperity Beef burger was filled with a beef patty with a onion black pepper sauce. It was very juicy and tender. There was just more than enough sauce in the entire thing.

Curly Fries

Another item that is limited on the menu, curly fries. I don’t go to McD’s enough in Canada, but I’m pretty sure they don’t have curly fries here. Well, they do in Hong Kong! But, only for this combo. More or less, it tasted like curly fries from Arby’s.

Hot Chocolate

I would have thought that drinks would be less sweet in Hong Kong because people in Hong Kong has lesser of a sweet taste buds. But, I guess these machines are standard. It was still very sweet, compared to other drinks in Hong Kong.

So there we have it, Chinese New Year doesn’t require traditional Chinese food. A simple burger could just do the same.

Happy Chinese New Year to all my readers!

Korean Food Cart on North Road

Korean Waffles/Pancake Food Cart

Yes! You have heard it right. There are food carts in Coquitlam. However, this one isn’t very visible. It’s in the same mall as Hannam Korean Supermarket. In fact,  it’s actually right next to it, underneath the bridge!  My girlfriend and I were on the grocery run for some hot pot food at Hannam and discovered this food cart in the freezing cold. We were very lucky to catch it too because they were nearly closing. Read the rest of this entry »

Pasta Polo

This Pasta Polo has been in the Coquitlam area since way back. I remember it being a pretty vibrant place. Well, we came here on a Monday night with the family. Thanks to my brother, he decided to treat us to dinner. But, it was like an empty restaurant during prime dinner time! There were only a handful of diners.

Everything was quite prompt. However, my mom did complain about the cups were not very clean. Read the rest of this entry »
