Benkei Ramen on Urbanspoon

Benkei Ramen

My girlfriend and I had decided to come downtown a few weeks ago for Ramen. I’m not sure why this is, but many of the best ramen places are situated here in downtown Vancouver and never in the ‘burbs. I mean, in the burbs we can find excellent sushi restaurants and other ethnics restaurants but not ramen.

The restaurant was quiet when we arrived at close to 3pm. I had accidently took the wrong route, thinking it was the fast route and headed straight for Stanley Park. So I gave my girlfriend a car tour of the seawall (which she has never been to before after living in Vancouver her whole life). So if you think you can turn left on to Denman from West Georgia, think again!

Chasiu Onigiri

This was a little appy we got before our ramens because we were just starvin’, it’s basically their chasiu “BBQ pork” rice shaped into a triangular rice ball wrapped with dried seaweed. Overall, I quite liked it. Read the rest of this entry »

Valentine's Special

Today I’m taking you to Suika, the Top 10 restaurants people are talking about in Vancouver (according to Urbanspoon.com).  I took my girlfriend here on our Valentine’s dinner dine-out. We’ve been wanting to visit this place for awhile, but never had the chance to yet (until tonight). My girlfriend and I both have a feeling for Japanese food. And with flares and attention that this restaurant has been getting, I had somewhat of an expectation of what I’m getting into before stepping foot into the restaurant.

Suika

Being me, I made reservations way ahead of time. I still remember them asking me which day I’m coming in. I had told them “Valentine’s” 3 times but still want the actual date! Yes, February 14th! We arrived at around 7. We were seated at the back of the restaurant, which is caged in! It’s interesting. But I like it better, it’s quieter, but not really. You can’t really have a quiet Japanese tapas restaurant. The great news is THE VIBE is there! Read the rest of this entry »

Yuu Japanese Tapas

This Japanese Tapas is next to the all famous Deer Garden Signature inside Continental mall in Richmond. So what is Tapas? Well, the term “Tapas” originated from Spain (believe it or not). It’s a word they use to describe appy’s or snacks, so basically small dishes, usually found in drinking establishments. However, it grew in popularity to become a Cuisine. However, the food portions I see here does not reflect its restaurant name “Tapas”.

Our Table

My girlfriend and I visited this place with the recommendation of her sister. Originally, we wanted Japanese Sushi and rolls at our favourite Charcoal  Sushi, but they had no tables for us during prime dinner time. So, we decided to give this place a try.   Read the rest of this entry »

Takano Japanese Noodle Café on Urbanspoon

Takano

It’s been awhile since I’ve eaten in Coquitlam. There’s just too many restaurants in the lower mainland to explore. I think it’ll take several years before one can taste all the restaurants in the lower mainland, just look at Richmond and Vancouver downtown, there’s well over 1000 listings on Urbanspoon!

Well, my girlfriend and I are stepping into this small restaurant just on the border of Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam. It’s basically a hidden restaurant. You won’t find it unless you pass by it on Westwood Street.

Tea

Table

There wasn’t that many people there on the Saturday afternoon. We were served with tea and menu’s right away. We concluded that the place was run by a Korean couple. I guess Korean really like noodles. There is Jimoco‘s that makes pasta, which is also opened by Korean chef. Read the rest of this entry »

Hokkaido Ramen Santouka on Urbanspoon

Santouka Ramen

Last week, my mom and I were in downtown because I had to driver her to her doctor’s appointment and so we decided to stay in downtown for lunch. The weather that morning was on and off rain, but it was super cold! Well, cold for the normal Vancouverite. Normally we would go for dim sum because she’s a hardcore fan of “yum cha” (dim sum in Chinese). But, it was too cold. So, we decided to go for a bowl of hot ramen. I took out my BlackBerry while she was doing her check-up, and searched up ramen places in Vancouver and found Santouka Hokkaido Ramen on Robson. I had Kintaro on my mind, but I was in a mood for something new.

Santouka Ramen

We walked in 5 minutes before noon, and got seated right away. The restaurant was 80% full then, since it was lunchtime. But after we ordered, it was packed. There were at least 10+ people waiting in line. My mind quietly said, “yes! we beat the crowd again. Grin!” One thing that I didn’t really like about this place is the lack of room for your jackets and bags or whatever you may have. They have baskets on the sides (you can vaguely see one on the left-hand corner) for your belongings, but not much. Especially on a cold winter day. Read the rest of this entry »

Fumisen, Tenku Bakudanyaki, Shoryumen

Today, we are going to visit a food place that is located outdoors in the open. It’s a collection of 3 different Japanese cuisines. Fumisen serving Sushi cones, Tenku serving Bakudanyaki (a Japanese style savoury fritter, topped with an assortment of sauces and seasonings), and Shoryumen serving ramen.

Location/Hours:

They are all located next to each other. This is their newest location: 8740 Charles Street, in Richmond, BC. This is behind Costco and right next to the Bridgeport Skytrain Station. Very easily accessible even if you do not have a car. Their WINTER HOURS are from noon-8pm, weather dependant.

My girlfriend and I visited this place by the recommendation of her sister. And we visited this place on a rather cloudy October day, but they were still open. This is our first time here, so we decided to eat less adventurist. (Sorry, I didn’t have my camera with me today. So, I had to use my BlackBerry.) Read the rest of this entry »
