Cafe Medina on Urbanspoon

Back room of Cafe Medina

Medina by day and Chambar by night. I have wanted to visit Medina for brunch awhile now, but never made it in because both my girlfriend and I are late-wakers on the weekend. And so by the time we get downtown, it’ll be already like afternoon tea time (ok, I maybe exaggerating a little). We got to Medina around half past 1 and we still had to put our name on the list for a 20 minutes wait. By the time we were seated, the restaurant was emptying because they only serve brunch till 3pm. If you want to save on parking, I would suggest parking at Tinseltown, buying something worth a dollar there and walk up a block. It’ll save you from paying $2 per hour or was it half an hour. Catch 122 Cafe Bistro on Urbanspoon

Catch 122

On the first day of dine out, my girlfriend and I came to Catch 122 cafe bistro. Though the name was familiar to me, I had never visited Catch 122. Now for those who haven’t been to Catch 122, it’s a bistro and a cafe. This meaning it’s more casual than a bistro and you don’t get the same fine dining feeling when you enter say a bistro. By far it’s a cafe at day and a bistro at night.

Catch 122

We arrived at around 6:30pm and one thing I liked about the restaurant was that its tables were fairly spaced out and had plenty of space for walking. As with most restaurants in the area, most of them have a rustic feel to it with their higher than normal ceiling and brick walls. It is quite the same at Catch 122.

Hot Water

We were seated right away and decided on the best beverage for tonight, hot water! It was the best on a cold night and a sick night.

Lobster & Prawn Bisque with pan seared scallop

My girlfriend, being the soup lover, of course ordered the soup. I had a little bit. It was a lobster and prawn bisque, lukewarm at best. But it was very tasty. The pan seared scallop was raw but fresh seafood doesn’t really need to be cooked all that well.

Duck Confit Ravioli

I had the house-made duck confit ravioli, ricotta and sage butter. It was exactly what I expected (in terms of portion). Every time I am out and about for ravioli, it seemed that they come in the smallest portion available. And this being the appetizer, it was exactly what I expected. The ravioli was very tasteful despite any sauce except for butter and stuffed with duck confit. A few more would be nice. Read the rest of this entry »

Meat & Bread (Gastown) on Urbanspoon

This is my 2nd time at Meat & Bread, but my first at this location. I visited the newer Meat & Bread a few weeks ago at the West Pender location. Today, I’m here at the Gastown location on Cambie with my girlfriend.

Meat & Bread at work

It was a sunny Saturday and it was past 1pm, but when we arrived there were at least 20+ people in line. The occupancy inside the restaurant was definitely bigger than the one in the other location with over 30 spots. And it was packed, so we decided to get take-out and eat in the car. Gastown

My girlfriend and I visited this hidden restaurant in historic Gastown the other weekend and she loved it! We had planned to come visit this restaurant awhile ago, but we were both occupied with other restaurants we have backlisted. It took me awhile to find this one, it’s kind of hidden, slipped away into the alley of Carrall. Not only was this restaurant hard to find, it was very hard to find parking too (if not, quite expensive). There’s a parkade on Cordova, it’s $7 flat rate on weekends. I didn’t want to put down $7 for a 2 hour dinner. So, I drove around blocks looking for free/cheaper parking. Note: If you want cheaper parking, resort to the meter parkings on Cordova, they are cheaper than the nearby side streets. And If you want even cheaper parking, resort to the Easy Park in Chinatown a few blocks down (but you’ll have to walk a couple blocks).

The Restaurant (Inside)

When we walked in the restaurant at around 7:30pm on a Saturday night, it was already pretty full. Although we were 15 minutes late for our reservation, we were nearly seated right away. The restaurant is for more the business party, as you walk in, you will notice most people are in smart business casual. Read the rest of this entry »
