Came here on a Friday evening with my girlfriend, just the two of us. It was nice to wind the week down with a candle light dinner. We made reservations ahead of time, but the tiny lobby was packed when we arrived. One unforgettable thing I remembered about this place was the servers. They were dropping things all over, tells me much about the service I was going to get.
Shortly after we ordered, our server brought us Pita bread with Tzatziki dip. I think my girlfriend was too hungry, so we just digged in without thinking too much about it.
We ordered a Kalamari to start. The Kalamari was tender inside and lightly crispy outside, served with Tzatziki. This wasn’t bad, but I’ve had better.
As per entree, I got the roast lamb, which was a slow roasted lamb shoulder topped with a lamb sauce. The sauce was interesting because I’ve never had anything like it. It gave the lamb a bit more juice. The entree was served with rice pilaf, potato, greek salad, tzatziki and more pita bread. The portions were quite generous. Everything was quite flavourful, but I’ve got to say the potato at My Greek Taverna is my favourite.
My girlfriend had the Canneloni which turned out to be not too bad. Canneloni is a baked pasta with ground beef, spinach, carrots, celery and cheese filled in a pasta tube. Then topped with meat sauce and baked with mozzarella. It’s served with garlic bread and parmesan. The meat sauce was pretty strong, I only had a few bites and I was already full.
We had an Entertainment coupon so we saved on the Kalamari (sort of). Overall, Sokela was an interesting dining experience. I didn’t think it was spectacular, but decent. The food on the whole was good. The ambiance inside was dark and gloomy. You are basically having a candle light dinner. However, I felt squished in space and for some reason just wasn’t so comfortable. The service, as I had mentioned before, was mediocre. The servers dropped glass, paper, and who knows what else. However, our server was quite friendly. Though maybe it was Friday night, they seemed to be lacking in servers.
