Deer Garden has its long history in Coquitlam being a popular family restaurant/cafe that serves Hong Kong style cafe food. One reason why people come here is because their lunch portions are huge for the price it charges compared to other HK cafe restaurants in the area. Although, in the tough economic times, it has raised its prices a few times in the past few years. It’s averagely $10 a dish for lunch, but the portions could easily make up two meals.
Alike Carefree restaurant in Port Moody, Deer Garden has its own version of the fish soup noodles bowl, where you pick and choose items of your choice. I’m not sure if Deer Garden do put MSG into their soup bases, but I do notice it is a bit more salty than Carefree. Nevertheless, the fish soup was still really good. In terms of price, it is the same as Carefree. $7.50 a bowl = your choice of soup base + 2 toppings + choice of noodles + drink.
I really like their baked stuff here because it’s (usually) baked to perfection and served HOT. This baked seafood is one of my favourites, which include fried fish, mushroom, and squid in a cream sauce and then baked till golden brown.
This is my other favourite baked dish here. It’s a baked pork chop on spaghetti. The rice and spaghetti is substitute-able. Instead of the cream sauce, they have a very delicious tomato cream sauce.
I rarely order this here because I don’t think it’s worth the $6.50, but I just felt like having it today. And to my expectations, this is not bad. The chicken wings are a decent size. There were about 5 or 6 wings, I can’t exactly remember. The fries were very crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside. It was almost like Costco fries!
Most of the lunches come with an order of drink. Deer Garden drinks are less watered-down than Carefree. It’s noticeably they use more milk to make their drinks. But, there still could be improvements.
Just to take a look at the size of their lunch combos, this is the size of their regular lunch combos, which used to be $8.xx, but is now $10. But, it is still huge!
Overall, Deer Garden’s food is good for its prices. They are known for their large portions. They have renovated earlier this year, however, it still feels quite the same inside. The parking might be a pain on the weekends, and it is most likely you will have to wait for a spot inside and out. Reservations are recommended. In terms of service, I think it could be a mix review. But most of the time, they are quite friendly and they’ll treat you like family once they start recognizing you.
