First of all, I don’t be misguided by the name of this place inside Empire Centre food court. In fact, they don’t sell snacks here. Just like how “Wo Fung Dessert” in Aberdeen Mall food court does not sell desserts. I don’t understand how Asians came up with names for their stores. This little shop in the hidden Empire Centre food court is a hidden gem. They are best known for their “Bo Jai Fan”, which translates to rice in a pot.
They have 8 different selections for you to choose from. In addition to other things they have. But, this is the special 8! And I’m very sorry, the menu is only in Chinese. But, I believe they have an english version of it in a business card version. I recommend calling ahead of time to place your order as it does take awhile for it to cook (roughly 20 minutes).
Here we have a Satay Ostrich Rice pot with Chinese mushroom and vegetables. It was very flavourful. I thought it was a good mixture with the plain rice. The special process of the rice pot here is that they don’t just cook rice in a rice cooker and put it in a pot. Instead, they use uncooked rice and cook it straight in the pot. However, for $10.50 I think it’s a bit on the expensive side, as ostrich meat really just tastes like beef, but a little more tender.
I’m not exactly how to translate “Cheung Yu” into English. But, I’m guessing it’s dried squid. This is a dish you like to smell more than eat, as it smells really tasty. It’s served with diced chicken and vegetables. This rice pot was lacking a little flavour in my opinion, but nonetheless not bad.
The best part of these rice pots are the very bottom (if it’s not burnt). In Chinese, we call it “fan chiu”. It’s basically a crispy layer of rice on the bottom of the pot. Some people like it, some people don’t. But, it’s definitely for people with teeth because it’s quite chewy.
That’s all for today. Have a cold and windy Monday my fellow Vancouverites! And for those not in Vancouver, you’re lucky to not be here today. It’s chilly, rainy, stormy…you get the point!
